The Search for Style

Dramatic, Classic, Elegant, Chic, or Just You?
Today’s designers offer us a bewildering array of styles from which to choose. With so many options, deciding on the ones that are best for us can be a real problem.
Many recent books have defined categories of styles to help those struggling to find their own special look. These categories are ideal starting points. That have helped make us aware of the difference in styles and encouraged us to search for that one special, perfect style.
Our lifestyles today make it important for us to be able to wear many different styles depending on the occasion, not to mention our moods and our need for excitement and change. By expanding the definitions of the categories, we can end the search for a single style and consider several. Lets stop for a moment to look at these expanded definitions.
A Dramatic person is often described as tall and slim, with vivid coloring,
angular features, and a certain sophistication. Does that mean that someone who’s five-foot-two can’t look dramatic?
Absolutely not! It depends on how you define “dramatic.” I have always considered dramatic to be a high-fashion look that anyone can wear, regrdless of her size and shape, if she truly has the desire for this look and understands the rules of dressing. Many petite women look marvelous in ultra high-fashion clothes.
Many tall, slim, angular women just don’t look right in high-fashion look and would never feel comfortable dressed that way. The Off-stage Carol Burnett is a perfect example. She is obviously comforable in conservative clothing, and has given priority to her desires, feelings, and personality in selecting clothing. When dramatic is defined as an extreme in line and design, we realize that very few people are able to dress in dramatic, style while looking and feeling appropriate for all occasions. Cher, is one of the few who can wear extremes and obviously feel comfortable in them. Bob Mackie, who designs clothing for both Carol Burnett and Cher, has been able to create styles that are appropriate for both by considering their physicial characteristics and personalities as well as their likes and dislikes was.
In the study of style, extremes are rarely considered good fashion. Let’s define Dramatic, as a high-fashion look that is tastefully done and can be worn by anyone, regardless of her size and shapes.
These example names are taken from the old school, and I am from the old school. Back later with the Classic style.
